Housing and Residential Communities offers approximately 16 graduate assistantships, which provide the following:
- Full tuition coverage for nine hours of enrollment, regardless of in-state or out-of-state status
- A rent-free apartment space on campus, typically within the area in which the GA works.
- A monthly stipend of $418/mo for 1 st year GAs and $442/mo for 2 nd year and beyond GAs, paid for 10-months August 1 – May 31
- Eligibility for a meal plan upgrade if the GA chooses to purchase a meal plan through Bama Dining.
The requirements to be a GA within HRC are as follows:
- Must be fully admitted to a degree-seeking program and enrolled full-time in a graduate program at The University of Alabama
- Must have and maintain a 2.65 cumulative GPA during the term of employment
- Must live on-campus in a provided space
- Must be able to work 20 hours per week as an employee of the University, including some nights and weekend work
- Start date of August 1
The Preferred Qualifications to be a GA within HRC include:
- Previous work experience in a residential setting
- Enrolled in a related course of study, including but not limited to: Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Communications, or Business
- Flexibility in work schedule and tasks
Typical tasks undertaken by our GA staff include:
- Providing functional supervision of programming efforts for up to 28 Resident Advisors
- Assisting in the advisorship of a student organization, The Hall Council
- Providing administrative support to the Community Director for an assigned living area
- Assisting with the implementation and adjudication of the Community Living Standards within a residence hall
- Managing budgetary responsibilities for programming efforts within a living area
