8. Funding Administered through Student Financial Services

Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and Federal Work-Study are administered through Student Financial Services, Box 870162, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0162. Students applying for loans and/or work-study must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and an Institutional Application for Financial Aid. Please contact Student Financial Services at (205) 348-6756 should you have any questions. Priority consideration is given to applicants whose file is complete on or before March 1 of the award year. A summary of aid programs is as follows:

Federal Direct Stafford/Ford Subsidized Loan is based on need. The maximum annual award is $8,500. If you qualify for a subsidized loan, the federal government pays the interest on the loan until you begin repayment and during authorized periods of deferment thereafter. Interest rate is variable with a cap of 8.25%. The interest rate is adjusted each year on July 1.

Federal Direct Stafford/Ford Unsubsidized Loan is not based on need. Maximum annual award is $10,000. The student will be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. The student can choose to pay the interest or allow it to accumulate. Interest rate is variable with a cap of 8.25%. The interest rate is adjusted each year on July 1.

The Elizabeth Coleman Honors Scholarship is awarded to full-time students based on previous scholastic record, character, and scholastic potential; no consideration is given to the student's financial need. Each scholarship provides up to $2,000 per year, and may be renewed up to three times. The award is disbursed in two equal installments at the beginning of each semester of the academic year. The University Supply Store Book Scholarship has been endowed by The University of Alabama Supply Store to assist enrolled students with obtaining books and supplies to support their education. The endowment was established in recognition and appreciation of the student patronage of the "SUPe Store." Contact Student Financial Services for application forms. Deadline date to apply is January 1.

The University of Alabama Student Employment Center, located in Student Financial Services, (telephone 205/348-2970), is a resource for students at The University of Alabama who want part-time employment, whether for a few days or a full year, on or off campus. The Student Employment Center provides employment tips and seminars, and counsels students about their part-time employment needs.
