UA ANNOUNCES GRADUATE COUNCIL FELLOWSHIP AWARDS FOR 2001-2002
The University of Alabama Graduate School announces the recipients
of the 2001-2002 Graduate Council Fellowships. Graduate Council
Fellowships are the most prestigious and competitive graduate
fellowships at the University and are awarded to graduate students
with the highest academic and scholarly qualifications. Recipients
are selected by the UA Graduate Council, which consists of faculty
members from each college of the University. The fellowship pays
for tuition and fees, plus an annual stipend. A total of 60 graduate
students were awarded the fellowship for 2001-2002.
JESSICA MARIE TUCKER
Jessica Marie Tucker of Nashville, Tennessee has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002
academic year. Tucker is in the master's degree program in tax accounting.
Tucker graduated summa cum laude from UA with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
She was finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship at The University of Alabama. She was
a member of Golden Key National Honor Society and the University Honors Program.
VIRGINIA HUEY-JONG LEI
Virginia Huey-Jong Lei of Scottsboro, Alabama has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002
academic year. Lei is in the master's degree program in taxation. Lei graduated
from UA with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Lei was a member of the Mortar
Board National Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma National Business Honorary,
and the Anderson Society.
BENJAMIN EDWARD GUNSBERG
Benjamin Edward Gunsberg of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Detroit has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2001-2002 academic year. Gunsberg, is in the master's degree program in
creative writing. Gunsberg graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with a
bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies. He received a Riverdale
Scholarship.
ANTHONY DYER HOEFER, JR.
Anthony Dyer Hoefer, Jr., of Sumpter, S.C. has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Hoefer is in the master's degree program in American Studies. Hoefer graduated
from Wofford College with a bachelor's degree in English and government.
DONAN ELIZABETH ECKLES
Donan Elizabeth Eckles of Starkville, Mississippi has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002
academic year. Eckles is in the master's degree program in finance. Eckles
graduated from Mississippi State College with a bachelor's degree in forestry.
ROBERT ASHLEY CAVE
Robert Ashley Cave of Linden, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Cave is in the master's degree program in banking and finance. Cave graduated
from UA with a bachelor's degree in quantitative finance. Cave was named the
2001 Beta Gamma Sigma Outstanding Undergraduate Student. He also received the
Marcus Whitman Finance Award and the Faculty Excellence Award.
TODD ASHLEY MORRIS
Todd Ashley Morris of Dickson, Tennessee, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Morris is in the master's degree program in analytical chemistry. Morris
graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a bachelor's degree
in chemistry.
JENNIFER LYNN MORRIS
Jennifer Lynn Morris of Muskogee, Oklahoma, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Morris is in the doctoral degree program in child clinical psychology. Morris
graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Morris also was a member of Psi Chi psychology national honor society and Golden
Key.
KIMBERLY WALTERS
Kimberly Walters of Provo, Utah, has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council
Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year. Walters
is in the master's degree program in anthropology. Walters graduated from Brigham
Young University and Bryn Mawr College. Walters was a University honors graduate
and a departmental valedictorian.
ASHLEY ELIZABETH HANSON
Ashley Elizabeth Hanson of Huntsville, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic
year. Hanson is in the doctoral degree program in clinical psychology. Hanson
graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a bachelor's degree in biology
and psychology.
JOSHUA REECE AARON
Joshua Reece Aaron of Loundon, Tennessee, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Aaron is in the master's degree program in business administration. Aaron graduated
magna cum laude from UA with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Aaron received
the Freshman Economics Award and a Presidential Scholarship. He recently completed
an internship with Ernst and Young in Birmingham.
ELIZABETH SUSAN HOGAN
Elizabeth Susan Hogan of Brockport, New York, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Hogan is in the master's degree program in creative writing. Hogan graduated from
Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in English and textual studies.
MEREDITH BROOK EVANS
Meredith Brook Evans of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002
academic year. Evans is in the master's degree program in accounting. Evans
graduated magna cum laude from UA with a bachelor's degree in accounting. She
was a tax intern for the Warren, Averett, Kimbrough and Marino LLC accounting
firm in Birmingham.
TONY HOWELL CROSS
Tony Howell Cross of Douglas, Georgia, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic
year. Cross is in the doctoral degree program in clinical psychology. Cross
graduated from Georgia Southern with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Cross
also received a master's degree from Georgia State University in clinical
psychology.
ROY THOMAS COOPER, IV
Roy Thomas Cooper, IV of Birmingham, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002
academic year. Cooper is in the doctoral degree program in finance. Cooper
received a bachelor's and master's degree in accounting from Auburn University.
MICHAEL CHARLES YATES
Michael Charles Yates of Helena, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Yates is in the master's degree program in banking and finance. Yates graduated
from UA with a bachelor's degree in finance. Yates was given the College of
Commerce and Business Administration Outstanding Undergraduate award.
GARY SCOTT STILLWELL
Gregory Scott Stillwell of Oxford, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Stillwell is in the master's degree program in geography. Stillwell graduated
from UA with a bachelor's degree in environmental science. In 1999, Stillwell
was named the UA Environmental Science Undergraduate of the Year.
BRANDI CHERIE SMITH
Brandi Cherie Smith of Dothan, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Smith is in the master's degree program in English. Smith graduated summa cum
laude from the University of Memphis with a bachelor's degree in English.
CHANNABASAVANNA BANGALORE
Channabasavanna Bangalore of India and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2001-2002 academic year. Bangalore is in the master's degree program in applied
statistics. Bangalore graduated from Sri Jayachamarasendra College with a
bachelor's degree in polymer technology. Bangalore received a National Talent
Merit Scholarship.
MARCUS T. BOCCACCINI
Marcus T. Boccaccini of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Boccaccini is in the doctoral degree program in psychology. Boccaccini graduated
from Santa Clara University with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He has had 15
publications in scholarly journals.
CHRISTIAN KIEWITZ
Christian Kiewitz of Northport, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Kiewitz is in the doctoral degree program in human resource management. Kiewitz
graduated from Johannes Gutenberg Universitat in Mainz, Germany, with a bachelor's
degree in mass communication. He also received a master's degree in communication
from Auburn University.
SCOTT A. REESE
Scott A. Reese of Milton, Wisconsin has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council
Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year. Reese is
in the doctoral degree program in biology. Reese graduated from the University of
Wisconsin in Superior with a bachelor's degree in biology.
JOHN JOSEPH DAVIES
John Joseph Davies of Northport, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate
Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Davies is in the doctoral degree program in mass communication. Davies graduated
from the University of Alberta in Canada with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He
also received a master's degree in mass communication from Brigham Young
University.
MOONHEE YANG
Moonhee Yang of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council
Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year. Yang is
in the doctoral degree program in mass communication. Yang graduated from Sodemyung
Women's University in Seoul, Korea, with a bachelor's degree in political science and
international relations. Yang also received a master's degree in broadcasting from
Korea University.
CATHERINE MARY ROAN
Catherine Mary Roan of Potomac, Maryland has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council
Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2001-2002 academic year. Roan is in
the master's degree program in English. Roan graduated cum laude from Loyola College in
Maryland with a bachelor's degree in English.
