| UA Graduate School Names Fellowship Recipients for 2004-05 |

| TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Alabama Graduate School recently announced the recipients of the 2004-2005 Graduate Council Fellowships. The Graduate Council Fellowship recipients are selected by the UA Graduate Council which consists of graduate faculty members from each college of the University. This fellowship is the most prestigious and competitive graduate fellowship at the University. They are awarded to graduate students with the highest academic and scholarly qualifications. The following students and the degrees they are seeking at UA were among the 70 students chosen as 2004-2005 UA Graduate Council Fellows: |

Sandor of Los Angeles, CA, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Sandor
is in the master's degree program in creative writing. At
UA, Sandor was awarded the Graduate Council Thesis Fellowship and a
Graduate Teaching Award. Sandor received a bachelor’s degree in
religious studies from Smith College in 1996. Johnson of Waynesboro, GA, has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2004-2005 academic year. Johnson is in the master's degree program in anthropology and was awarded the David L. DeJarnette Scholarship for Excellence in the Study of Prehistoric Moundville. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Georgia in 2001. Karpe of Noblesville, IN, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Karpe
is in the doctoral degree program in psychology.
Karpe received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the
University of Miami in 2001. Karpe was a recepient of the Bowman
Foster Ashe Scholarship, USA Group Leadership Scholarship, and
President's 100 at the University of Miami and was a Phi Kappa Phi
member. Martin of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Martin
is in the master's degree program in finance.
Martin received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the UA
in 2003. Martin received the Faculty Award for Excellence in
Economics. Funderburk of Tallassee, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Funderburk
is in the doctoral degree program in biological sciences.
Funderburk received a bachelor’s degree in biology and
chemistry from UA in 2004. Funderburk
made the President's List; was summa cum laude and a Howard Hughes
Medical Institute Intern. Davis of Montgomery, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Davis
is in the master's degree program in aerospace engineering.
Davis received a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering
from UA in 2004. Davis was named USA Today Academic All-American, a
member of the National Collegiate Honors Council and a 2003 Porte
Scholar. Stuenkel of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Stuenkl
is in the master's degree program in accounting.
Stuenkel received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UA
in 2003. Stuenkel was magna cum laude; made the Dean's List; Honors
Graduate; received the Capstone Day Scholarship, the Osie P. Spencer
Endowed Scholarship and James O. Banks Endowed Scholarship. Shockley of Tuscaloosa, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Shockley
is in the master's degree program in business administration. Shockley
received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the UA in 2002.
Shockley was cum laude and a member of the Golden Key Honor Society. Teters of Cincinnati, OH, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Teters
is in the doctoral degree program in history.
Teters received a bachelor’s degree in history from Northern
Kentucky University in 2003, where he received the Frank Steely Award
2004; the Lew Wallace Award in 2002; was Phi Alpha Theta Chapter
President 2002-03 and Cincinnati Civil War Roundtable President
2003-04. Pirkle of Thomson, GA, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Pirkle
is in the master's degree program in book arts.
Pirkle received a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Mercer
University in 2002. Pirkle is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Society,
Phi Eta Sigma honor society, and Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor
society; she is a Tift College Scholar and summa cum laude graduate. Lea of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Lea
is in the doctoral degree program in political science.
Lea received a bachelor’s degree in politics from Oglethorpe
University in 2004, where she graduated cum laude with a certificate
in the Rich Foundation Urban Leadership Program and was named
Outstanding Senior Politics Major from Oglethorpe University. McCaleb of Clarksville, TN, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. McCaleb
is in the master's degree program in English literature.
McCaleb received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and
English from UA in 2003. McCaleb
was a National Merit Scholar and a member of Sigma Tau Delta English
Honorary, Golden Key, and
Psi Chi and is a summa cum laude graduate. Coleman of Mobile, AL, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Coleman
is in the master's degree program in English.
Coleman received a bachelor’s degree in English from the UA
in 2002. Coleman was awarded the Presidential Scholarship for
Undergraduates and the Russell Willis English Scholarship and is a
summa cum laude graduate. Coffman of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Coffman
is in the master's degree program in accounting.
Coffman received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UA in
2004. Coffman was a
member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honorary; President of the
Gamma Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity, and a National
Merit Finalist in 2000. Webb of Anniston, AL, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Webb
is in the master's degree program in banking and finance.
Webb received a bachelor’s degree in financial management
from the UA in 2003. Webb was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa
Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies; a recepient of the Senior
Faculty Excellence Award; CFA Scholarship Award; twice received the
Outstanding Undergraduate Award; and was a President's Cabinet
Scholar. Griffin of Valdosta, GA, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Griffin
is in the master's degree program in English.
Griffin received a bachelor’s degree in drama/philosophy from
the University of Virginia in 1994. Griffin is a recipient of the
Hudson Strode Fellowship. Gurley of Mobile, AL, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Gurley
is in the master's degree program in social work.
Gurley received a bachelor’s degree in sociology/philosophy
from the University of South Alabama in 2003. Gurley was a recipient
of the McGlotheren Scholarship, the USA Sociology Scholarship, and the
Outstanding Undergraduate Award. Turnipseed of Montgomery, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Turnipseed
is in the master's degree
program in communication studies.
Turnipseed received a bachelor’s degree in communication
studies from Clemson University in 2004.
At Clemson, Turnipseed was awarded the P. Spratt and Lucille W.
Harris Award for 2001-04, competed nationally representing Clemson
University on the Forensics team, and was ranked nationally in both
NFA and AFA N.I.E.T. competitions for 4 years. Robinson of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Robinson
is in the master's degree program in social work.
Robinson received a bachelor’s degree in social work from UA
in 2004. Robinson was
chosen for the USA Today Academic All-Academic Team; received the John
Fraser Ramsey Award; was named a National Alumni Association
Outstanding Senior, and was a member of XXXI women's honorary. Phippips-Welborn of Oneonta, AL, has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama
for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Phippips-Welborn is in the master's degree program in creative
writing. Phippips-Welborn
received a bachelor’s degree in English from Birmingham-Southern
College in 1999. Phippips-Welborn
received first place in the poetry category of Atlantic Monthly
Student Writer's competition in 2001and elected to Phi Beta Kappa in
1999. Before beginning
graduate studies, she worked for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
and the A+ Education Foundation of Alabama. Tibbs of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Tibbs
is in the master's degree program in industrial engineering.
Tibbs received a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering
from UA in 2004. Tibbs
made the Dean's List, President's List and was nominated as Industrial
Engineering Outstanding Sophomore and Junior. She was a member of Tau
Beta Pi Outstanding Sophomore and Senior; Mortar Board National
Honorary; Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering Honor Society; Golden Key
National Honor Society; University Honors Program; National Society of
Collegiate Schoalrs; Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honorary; Alpha Lambda
Delta Honor Society, and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Alleman-Velez of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama
for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Alleman-Velez is in the master's degree program in
anthropology. Alleman-Velez
received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Louisiana
State University in 1994 and a master’s in 2000 from UA in public
health. Alleman-Velez is
a 2004 NIH Minority International Research Training Fellow and a
2004 University of Michigan
Population Fellows Program GAP Grantee. McPherson of Montgomery, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. McPherson
is in the master's degree program in accountancy.
McPherson received a bachelor’s degree in business
administration from Faulkner University in 2004 and a master’s in
2002 from the Florida College in liberial arts.
McPherson was named Who's Who American Colleges and
Universities; was an Alabama Society of CPA's Scholarship Recepient;
and was a Faulkner University summa cum laude graduate. Cho of Seoul, South Korea, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Cho
is in the doctoral degree program in social work.
Cho received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Soongsil
University in 1992 and a master’s in 2004 from Southern Illnois
University at Carbondale in rehabilitation.
Cho was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi (2002-2004) and was
awarded the Janet and Davis Stove Award at the Rehabilitation
Institute, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, IL. Shi of Beijing, China, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Shi
is in the master's degree program in business administration.
Shi received a bachelor’s degree in French from Peking
University in 2000 and a master’s in romances in 2003 from Duke
University. Shi was
awarded the Guang Cai Scholarship at Peking University in 1999 and the
Research Fellowship at Duke University 2001-03. Clark, of Paris, TN, has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Clark,
is in the doctoral degree program in history.
Clark, received a bachelor’s degree in history/philosophy
from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1999 and a master’s in
2001 from the UA in history. Clark
received the Frank Lawrence Owlsley Award for a Graduate Student in
U.S. History. Hodges of Greenwood, MS, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Hodges
is in the doctoral degree program in biological sciences.
Hodges received a bachelor’s degree in pharmaccutical
sciences from the University of Mississippi in 2000 and a master’s
in 2003 from the University of Mississippi in pharmaccutical sciences.
Hodges was a summa
cum laude graduate; received the University of Mississippi Graduate
Student Achievement Award in Pharmaccutical Sciences; was nominated to
the University of Mississippi Hall of Fame; and was a member of Phi
Kappa Phi and Rho Chi Honor Societies. Wharton of Leesburg, FL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Wharton
is in the doctoral degree program in social work.
Wharton received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from
Cambridge College in 1998 and a master’s in Psychology-MFT in 2000
from Cambridge College in psychology.
Wharton was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow; was a volunteer at
Bama Equine Assisted Therepy and Jeffco Children's Policy Council. Schwab of Springfield, MO, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Schwab
is in the doctoral degree program in history.
Schwab received a bachelor’s degree in history from
Washington University-St. Louis in 1964 and a master’s in 1966 from
Washington University-St. Louis in history.
Schwab received the Albert Burton Moore Memorial Award for
Outstanding Graduate Work in History-2002. Anderson of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Anderson
is in the doctoral degree program in higher education administration.
Anderson received a bachelor’s degree in applied arts from
Shorter College in 1983 and a master’s in congregational studies n
1987 from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Anderson was awarded the Most Outstanding Student
Award-Scholarship and Research in 2004; received the Merlin G. Duncan
Memorial Award in Educational Leadership and Administration 2003-04. Khudamrongsawat of Thailand, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Khudamrongsawat
is in the doctoral degree program in biological sociences.
Khudamrongsawat received a bachelor’s degree in biology from
the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2000 and a master’s in
botany in 2002 from the University of California-Riverside.
Khudamrongsawat made the Dean's List and was an Honor Student
in 1999. Tapu of Romania, has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Tapu
is in the doctoral degree program in chemistry.
Tapu received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Al. J.
Cuza University, Romania in 1998 and a master’s in chemisty in 2000
from Al. J. Cuza University, Romania.
Tapu received the Socrates Scholarship. Kirkley of Tuscaloosa, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Kirkley
is in the doctoral degree program in clinical psychology.
Kirkley received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from
Simmons College in 1997 and a master’s in psychology from Boston
University in 2000. Pu of Jishou, China, has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Pu
is in the doctoral degree program in chemistry.
Pu received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Beijing
Normal University in 1999 and a master’s in analytical chemistry
from the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Acedemic of Sciences in 2002. Liu of Dengzhou, China, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Liu
is in the doctoral degree program in geology.
Liu received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science
from ShanXi University in 1999 and a master’s in environmental
science from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 2002. Qi of Beijing, China, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Qi
is in the doctoral degree program in geology.
Qi received a bachelor’s degree in environmentals from ShanXi
University in 1999 and a master’s in environmental science from
Beijing Normal University in 2002. McPherson of Hendersonville, TN, has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama
for the 2004-2005 academic year.
McPherson is in the master's degree program in English.
McPherson received a bachelor’s degree in history/russian
from the UA in 1996 and a master’s in biblical studies from Lipscomb
University in 2000. Western of Dyersburg, TN, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Western
is in the doctoral degree program in chemistry.
Western received a bachelor’s degree in music and chemistry
from Middle Tennessee State University in 2001 and a master’s in
chemistry from UA in 2003. Scott of Tuscaloosa, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Scott
is in the doctoral degree program in computer science.
Scott received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from
Birmingham-Southern College in 1984 and a master’s in computer
science from the University of South Carolina in 1986. Wiseman of Sterling Heights, MI, has been chosen
to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama
for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Wiseman is in the master's degree program in printmaking.
Wiseman received a bachelor’s degree in 2-D and minor art
history from Central Michigan University in 2003. Ward of Tuscaloosa, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for

Mississippi in 2004. Morgan of Helena, AL, has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2004-2005 academic year. Morgan
is in the master's degree program in metallurgical engineering.
Morgan received a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical
engineering from UA in 2003. Roberts of Birmingham, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Roberts

Roberts received a bachelor’s degree in history from
Birmingham-Southern College in 2004. Buckalew of Tuscaloosa, AL, has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for
the 2004-2005 academic year. Buckalew
