UA ANNOUNCES GRADUATE COUNCIL FELLOWSHIP AWARDS FOR 2002-2003 The University of Alabama Graduate School announces the recipients of the 2001-2002 Graduate Council Fellowships. Graduate Council Fellowships are the most prestigious and competitive graduate fellowships at the University and are awarded to graduate students with the highest academic and scholarly qualifications. Recipients are selected by the UA Graduate Council, which consists of faculty members from each college of the University. The fellowship pays for tuition and fees, plus an annual stipend. A total of 60 graduate students were awarded the fellowship for 2001-2002.
Flavia da Nobrega Cunha
Cunha of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003 academic year. Cunha is in the doctoral degree program in metallurgical engineering. Cunha received a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science from the Federal University of Sao Carlos in 1997 and a Master’s in 2002 from the UA in Metallurgical Engineering. Jonathan Don Stanley
Stanley of Greenville, AL has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003 academic year. Stanley is in the doctoral degree program in accounting. Stanley received his bachelor’s degree 1999 at the UA in Accounting and his master’s in 2000 in tax accounting. He received the J. L. Bedsole Memorial Endowed Scholarship and previously worked with Ernst & Young as a tax consultant. Kimberly Walters
Walters of Provo, Utah has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003 academic year. Walters is in the master's degree program in anthropology. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1997 in Anthropology. Walters will be doing field research in Medical Anthropology in India this year. Karen Deeann McGough
McGough of Charleston, WV has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. McGough is in the master's degree program in industrial
engineering. She received a
bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the UA in 2002.
McGough had a research fellowship funded by the National Science
Foundation. Lu Wang
Wang of Handan, Hebei has been chosen to receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003 academic year. Wang is in the doctoral degree program in geology. In 1999, he received is bachelor’s degree from Tong Ji University in Marine Geology and his master’s degree in Seismic Geology from Peking University in 2002. Wang is the recipient of the Renming and Wang Xianxun
Scholarships. Heather Michelle Woods
Woods of Silver Springs, MD has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Woods is in the doctoral degree program in child clinical
psychology. She received a
bachelor’s degree in psychology from McDaniel College in 1999 and is a member
of Phi Beta Kappa. Kristi Kay Chenoweth
Chenoweth of Temple, Texas has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Chenoweth is in the master's degree program in finance.
In 2002, Chenoweth received a bachelor’s in accounting and finance.
In 1999-2002 she was listed on the Dean’s List, and in 2002, received
the Dean’s Honor Award and was listed in Who’s Who. Jennifer Mains
Mains of Noblesville, IN has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Mains is in the doctoral degree program in clinical psychology.
She is a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor
Society, the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society president, Phi Beta Kappa Honor
Society resident assistant, Golden Key Honor Society, President’s 100 at UM,
Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, Psychology Peer advisor and is currently working as
a title examiner at a law firm in South Florida. Harry Osborne Thomas, Jr.
Thomas, Jr. of Tallahassee, Florida has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2002-2003 academic year. Thomas is in the master's degree program in creative
writing. He received his
bachelor’s degree in English/creative writing from Emory University in 1999. Matthew Lewis Downs
Downs of Athens, Alabama has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Downs is in the master's degree program in history.
In 2002, he received his bachelor’s degree in history from
Birmingham-Southern College. Downs
received a Graduate Council Fellowship, is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, a
Honor’s Program Scholar recipient and member of Mortar Board.
He graduated with honors in history. Kim Cross
Cross of Sansalito, California has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Cross is in the master's degree program in journalism.
She received a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from UA in 1998.
Cross graduated summa cum laude, is a XXXI member and a national champion
water skier. She has been published
in and was a staff writer on Business 2.0 magazine.
Cross has also been published in Outside magazine and is currently
working on a book about green architecture and ecological design. Russell Kane Burnette
Burnette of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Burnette is in the master's degree program in accounting.
In 2002, Burnette received his bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity where he is President. Chad Matthew Stefaniak
Stefaniak of Flint, Michigan has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Stefaniak is in the master's degree program in accounting.
He received his bachelor’s in accounting from Central Michigan
University in 2002. Stefaniak is a
summa cum laude graduate, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Fraternity,
Golden Key National Honor Society, and National Scholastic Collegiate Society. Kimberly E. Johnson
Johnson of Jackson, Mississippi has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Johnson is in the master's degree program in social work.
From Hendrix College in 2001, she received her bachelor’s degree in
psychology. Johnson is a member of
the Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated magna cum laude with distinction in
psychology. Lana Estess
Estess of Clinton, Mississippi has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Estess is in the master's degree program in women's studies.

Information Systems. Gregory Sean Maddox
Maddox of Prattville, Alabama has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Maddox is in the master's degree program in finance.
He received his bachelor’s in 2002 from the UA in chemical engineering.
He graduated magna cum laude and has received the Bedsole Fellowship.
Maddox did a finance internship at Eastman Chemical Company of Kingsport,
Tennessee in 2002. Melissa Kaye Woodley
Woodley of Jasper, Alabama has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Woodley is in the Doctoral degree program in finance.
She received her bachelor’s degree in 1999 in finance at UAB and in
2002, a master’s in banking/finance from UA. Wade Michael Watkins
Watkins of Pelham, Alabama has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Watkins is in the doctoral degree program in finance.
Wade received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 2002 from the UA.

DeVasher of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003

Washington University in Missouri and in 2001, a master’s in marketing from

Walton of Macon, Georgia has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Walton is in the master's degree program in english.
She received her bachelor’s degree in 2002 from Mercer University in
English. Walton is a member of Phi
Kappa Phiand Sigma Tau Delta. She
is a recipient of the 2002 Phi Kappa Phi Award of Excellence, received Awards
for Honors in 2001 and 2002, and Outstanding Student in Introductory Physics.
Walton graduated summa cum laude, was on the President’s and Dean’s
List at Mercer University and was included in Who’s Who in American
Universities and Colleges. Lauren Elizabeth Downs
Downs of Hickory, North Carolina has been chosen to receive
a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Downs is in the master's degree program in anthropology.
She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill in anthropology in 2001. Christine Newkirk
Newkirk of LaMesa, California has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Newkirk is in the master's degree program in anthropology. In

Graves of Huntsville, Alabama has been chosen to receive a

German/English. Graves received the
Federation of German-American Clubs Fellowship to study in Germany and gave a

Hayes of Huntsville, Alabama has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Hayes is in the degree
program in accounting. She received
her bachelor’s degree in 2002 in accounting from the UA. Hayes is an Accounting Honors Graduate, received the Beta
Gamma Sigma Outstanding Senior and Gladys M. Poe Awards, in Commerce and
Business Administration Faculty Scholars Program and on the President’s List. Cyleste Cassandra Collins
Collins of Arcata, California has been chosen to receive a
Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the 2002-2003
academic year. Collins is in the doctoral degree program in social work.
She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology at University of
California-Riverside in 1995 and in 1999, her master’s in psychology from the

Lam of Charleston, South Carolina has been chosen to
receive a Graduate Council Fellowship to The University of Alabama for the
2002-2003 academic year. Lam is in the doctoral degree program in accounting.

Hodgeschool van Uteecht and in 2002 a master’s degree in accountancy from
