| There are several areas under enrollment requirements and tuition
grant qualifications that are different for interim and summer semesters.
Graduate Assistants Enrollment
The Graduate School no longer requires students to be enrolled in classes
for the interim and/or summer semesters if they hold an assistantship during
that period. However, in order to separately identify those students for
accounting and reporting purposes the budget to pay those students who
are not enrolled must be transferred to sub code 2550. Except for Graduate
Student Assistants (see previous section on Qualifications for Graduate
Assistantships), all graduate assistants whose positions continue through
or who are reappointed for the summer and are not in classes should
maintain the same occupation code that describes their appointment.
For example, a graduate assistant who is appointed May 16th and who
will be teaching a summer credit class and who is not enrolled in classes
will be coded to budget sub code 2550 and occupation code 4005.
For students who are not in class for Interim and
Summer Terms and who are not on a regular assistantship type, you may use
the Graduate Student Assistant classification with occupation code 6103.
Hourly Paid Student Employees
Course loads for students employed during an interim term
require at least 2 semester hours of enrollment (or the equivalent in
defined activities applicable to an advanced degree). For those employed
during a summer term the requirement is for at least 3 semester
hours (or the equivalent in defined activities applicable to an advanced degree).
Tuition Grants
In-state tuition grants are not usually available during interim
or summer employment to graduate assistantships appointed under
permanently budgeted lines because the appointment is usually for fall
and spring only. Out-of-state tuition grants are available for students based
upon their FTE during the previous spring or the following fall; all of the
out-of-state tuition is covered for 0.50 FTE students, half for 0.25 FTE
students, and prorated coverage for other levels of FTE in between.
Departments may appoint temporary assistantships or use up permanent
budgets for summer and interim appointments. These same funds must
be used to cover any in-state tuition awards for those semesters and any
out-of-state tuition awards for students who were not employed in the
previous spring semester.
