Student Health Center


Clinical Services

The most efficient way to receive e care at the SHC is by making an appointment. When you make an appointment you reduce the time you wait to be seen. Walk-In Service is also available in the general clinic. Students should be aware that the most urgent, emergency-type problems are handled first. Allergy and Immunization Services

The Allergy Clinic administers allergy injections s to students under the direction of the students' allergists or other physician. SHC staff do not administer initial allergy tests. Immunizations required for matriculation are provided on a fee basis.

Women's Health

Women's Health provides routine e pelvic exams, pap smears, contraception, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy testing and counseling.

The Counseling Center offers s a variety of psychological services to students. Although the department is limited to providing services of a short-term nature, it serves as an intake and referral resource that assists all students in identifying what their needs are and locating an appropriate local resource if their needs are outside the scope of services offered. Among the services provided are individual, couple, and group counseling and therapy, and substance abuse counseling. Staff counselors and therapists represent a variety of professions including counseling, psychiatry, psychology, and social work. All currently enrolled students are charged $20 per counseling session.

Travel Services

The Student Health Center offers basic travel l services for students planning study or travel abroad. In order to utilize these services please schedule and appointment specifically for this purpose by calling (205)348-2778. Prior to this appointment please download and complete the "Travel Service Planned Itinerary Form." We also recommend that you visit CDC Travelers' Health and specifically look at Region, Outbreaks, Safe Food and Water, and Cruise Ships and Air Travel.


Support Services

Clinical Laboratory (Lab)

Laboratory procedures performed by the University y Health Services will be billed directly to your insurance. There is a close referral relationship with a local reference laboratory for laboratory procedures not offered at SHC.

Radiological Services (X-ray)

There is a nominal charge to students of $15 5 for most X-rays done by the University Health Services. There is a professional contractual arrangement to provide interpretation of X-rays.

Pharmacy (Rx)

Pharmacy hours are nearly synonymous with the e hours of care of the SHC. Many prescription and non-prescription medications are available. Because all medications are purchased according to State Bid laws, prices are usually lower than in the community.


Counseling Center

The objective of the Counseling Center is to assist students in attaining their personal and academic goals, thereby making their time at The University of Alabama as productive and healthy as possible. It is our belief that students can more fully benefit from their educational experience when they utilize our services.

Counseling

The Counseling Center provides a variety of emotional health services to enrolled University students and their eligible spouses. Our center can provide confidential sessions to individuals, couples, and groups. Additional services include substance abuse counseling, crisis counseling, and psychiatric consultation. If needed, we also provide referrals to community resources.

Students come to our center for a wide range of issues: from stress to depression and anxiety to homesickness to learning to be assertive to relationship concerns. The number of sessions varies, but we are able to provide up to 15 individual sessions over a 12-month period to those students who qualify for our services.

Our center is designed to help students succeed. With a staff of professional psychologists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatrists, we are able to work with students to help them address obstacles to their personal and academic success.

Personal Development

The Counseling Center is very active in providing speakers and programming on all aspects of campus life, from residential life to the classroom. Our programs and workshops are designed to enhance a student's personal development and growth. We provide programming on topics such as stress management and relaxation training, effective communication, enhancing relationships, conflict management, and understanding depression and anxiety.

Consultation

Our center frequently serves as a resource to the entire University community and provides consultation to parents, faculty, staff, and students. In this aspect of our services, we help members of our community address questions regarding the emotional health and personal effectiveness of students. Often this service can be provided over the telephone. Commonly asked questions include: How can I address problems with my roommate?; I'm worried about a student. How can I help?; and What is depression?

Health Education and Wellness

The Health Education and Wellness Department of the Russell Student Health Center offers individual and group education on a variety of health topics, presentations for student organizations and classes, special health awareness events, and resources for students with academic projects.  Contact the Health Education and Wellness Department at 348-3878 to schedule an appointment, to request a program, or to receive more information.


Student Health Advisory Council

The Student Health Advisory Council (S.H.A.C.) is open to enrolled students at the University of Alabama who have a genuine interest in the quality of health care provided at the Russell Student Health Center. No application or dues are necessary.

The purpose of this organization is to provide students a voice concerning the quality and delivery of health care at the Russell Student Health Center by serving as a liaison between the student body and the administration representing the student body at the University of Alabama.

As a member of the S.H.A.C., you would have the opportunity to:
--Present student concerns and suggestions to the administration at the Student Health Center  (SHC)
--Formulate and recommend new ideas and programs which can enhance the quality of services for the student body at the SHC.
--Review and make recommendations relating to the student health center budget and the student health fee.
--Become eligible to be an active member of the American College Health Association
--Assist with recruitment of professional SHC staff.
