Hello! I'm Stacey Porter, and I'm a first year PhD student in Romance Languages in the Department of Modern Languages and Classics. I'm a Graduate Student Assistant, so I also teach introductory Spanish classes. My research interests include phonetics, phonology, morphology, and language acquisition. I am currently researching the effects that learning a second language has on pronunciation of the speaker's first language. I received my M.A. in Linguistics from California State University, Long Beach in 2010, and my Bachelor's degree is in Spanish and was completed at the University of California, Irvine in 2007. I taught English as a Second/Foreign Language at a university in China for two years, and I also taught ESL and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at two community colleges in Florida prior to moving to Alabama in 2014. At The University of Alabama, prior to entering my program, I did adjunct (part-time) work for both the English Department and the English Language Institute, teaching English composition and ESL, respectively.
In my free time, I crochet amigurumi, the Japanese art of creating crocheted stuffed animals, characters from video games, etc. I also have recently learned to sew, and now I make my own clothes and accessories. When I'm not reading for class, I like to read for fun; my guilty pleasure is Pride and Prejudice variations. I also figure skated competitively for 20 years
