Though it isn’t necessary to have all materials on-hand at the time of your application (e.g. letters of recommendation), we recommend you obtain and properly format as many as possible before you begin.

All admissions decisions are tailored to the individual based on their entire application. While this page outlines minimum requirements, not every applicant who meets the minimum is guaranteed admission. In special cases, applicants may be considered for admission with additional requirements. Contact your program director for more information.

GPA Requirements

To be considered for regular admission to the Graduate School, you must have at least one of the following GPAs (on a 4.0 scale):

  • An overall 3.0 GPA.
  • An overall 3.0 GPA in your last 60 semester hours.
  • A 3.0 GPA in your graduate program.

Admission with Permission to Continue

If your GPA is lower than recommended, you may be considered for admission with additional requirements. Please check with your prospective program for more information. 

Test Score Requirements

The majority of our programs are not currently requiring admission test scores. Please view our Test Score Requirements web page for more details. If required, you will need one of the following admission test scores to qualify for regular admission:

GRE ≥ 300 (school code = 1830)
GMAT ≥ 500
MAT ≥ 50th percentile
MCAT ≥ 50th percentile

NOTE: Many programs that require test scores have higher thresholds.

Admission with Permission to Continue

If your test scores are lower than required for regular admission, you may be considered for admission with additional requirements. Please check with your prospective program for more information.

Transcripts

You must upload an unofficial transcript for each higher learning institution (including community colleges) at which you earned at least 15 credit hours of coursework.

Official transcripts will be requested after admission.

Requirements

  • If you upload a digital transcript obtained directly from your registrar’s office, make sure the file does not expire on a particular date.
  • Please provide a key if your previous institution uses an unusual grading scheme (not the typical A, B, C, etc.).
  • If your transcript is in a language other than English, please submit a translation in the application portal.
  • Transcripts from The University of Alabama do not need to be submitted.

Recommendations

If required by your prospective program, your application will need to at least 3 letters of recommendation.

Once your application is submitted, your recommenders will receive a notification within 24-48 hours, allowing them to upload their statements.

Requirements

  • You must provide an email address for each recommender. The recommender will receive detailed instructions to submit their recommendation.
  • At least one letter should be from a professor at a previous institution.
  • Recommendations should be uploaded before the application deadline.

Application Fees

Application fees are nonrefundable and must be paid with each application submission.

$65 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents
$80 for international students

Exceptions

  • Veterans and current members of the U.S. military (submit your DD 214 or current assignment orders with your application)
  • Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program students (contact Kaitlynn Beaird for more information)
  • Applicants previously enrolled in Graduate School at The University of Alabama
  • UA undergraduates applying to the same program at the graduate level (To qualify, you must apply for the next available semester and have an overall GPA of at least 3.0)
  • Applicants who have submitted an eligible application for a GEM fellowship (contact Andrew Goodliffe for more information; international applicants are not eligible)
  • Applicants who are participating in the National Name Exchange (contact Kaitlynn Beaird for more information)

English Language Score Requirements

All non-native English speakers (domestic and international) must submit a score report from one the following examinations unless they meet one of the listed exceptions. Your scores must be less than two years old at the time of application.

TOEFL ≥ 79
IELTS ≥ 6.5
PTE ≥ 59

NOTE:: Some programs have higher English language score requirements

NOTE: The University of Alabama Graduate School accepts super-scores (such as a TOEFL MyBest™ score).

COVID-19 Language Scores

In response to COVID-19, international applicants now have the option to take the Duolingo English Test. To qualify for regular admission, applicants must score 105 or above.

NOTE: Not all programs currently accept Duolingo scores. Visit the Test Score Requirements page for more information.

Exceptions

Non-native English speakers do not have to submit scores if:

  1. at the time of initial enrollment, they will hold a degree from a U.S. institution or an institution in one of the English speaking countries or regions listed on our international admissions page
  2. at the time of initial enrollment, they will have been enrolled in coursework for at least two years at a U.S. institution or an institution in one of the English-speaking countries or regions listed on our international admissions page
  3. they are a citizen or legal resident of one of the English-speaking countries or regions listed on our international admissions page

Non-native speakers who do not meet these language score requirements may be considered for conditional language admission. For more information, visit the international admissions page.

Statement of Purpose

Most statements of purpose are 1-2 pages long and should describe your background, reasons for attending your chosen graduate program and post-graduation goals. Some programs do have more specific requirements. For program-specific questions regarding content or format, please contact your prospective program.
