The Graduate School at The University of Alabama (UA) has created the Strategic Graduate Partnerships Initiative (SGPI) as part of its ongoing efforts to continually improve graduate education at the university. A major component of improving graduate education is increasing access to graduate education.
SGPI’s strategy for improving access to graduate education is to develop partnerships with undergraduate and/or minority serving institutions that create pathways to graduate education.
Featured Initiatives
- Accelerated master’s program partnerships (AMP2) are similar to the advanced placement (AP) courses that allow advanced high school students to earn college credit prior to earning their high school diploma. The Stillman College / UA AMP2 provides an opportunity for Stillman College students to earn up to 12 credit hours towards their graduate degree in select programs.
- The SGPI Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is a 10-week on-campus program available to current undergraduate students. Student participants have opportunities to work directly with UA faculty who are experts in their fields, learn advanced methods used in graduate programs and in practice, participate in professional development workshops, and earn a $5,500 stipend.
- SGPI Graduate Fellowships are available to exceptional applicants and current students who have been admitted to an on-campus UA master’s program. Eligibility requirements are one or both of the following: (1) completion of an undergraduate degree from a partner institution; (2) completion of a SGPI Summer REU program.
- The UA / Stillman Cooperative Exchange Program allows fulltime UA students to enroll in Stillman College courses, and fulltime Stillman College students to enroll in UA courses. Participating students are only responsible for tuition at their home institution and do not have to pay tuition at the other institution.
