Chemical Engineering/Polymers

Flyer for the Chemical Engineering/Polymers Summer Bridge Research Experience for Undergraduates at The University of Alabama, May 17–July 24, 2026. Offers $5,680 stipend and free housing. Research areas include polymer composites, additive manufacturing, upcycling waste polymers, and biopolymer hydrogels. Eligibility: chemical engineering, chemistry, or related majors; rising juniors and seniors. Application deadline: March 1. Includes UA logo and QR code for details.

Program Description

  • Learn about the field of advanced polymer materials to make a sustainable, equitable impact on global quality of life.
  • Develop advanced polymer composites for improved quality of life through application in prosthetics, robotics, and wearable devices.
  • Study new methods of upcycling poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) to generate new methods of reusing and upcycling waste polymers.
  • 3D print polymerizable ionic liquids and probe the impact of fundamental structure-processing-property relationships of printed structures.
  • Biomanufacture human organoid extracellular matrix hydrogels and characterize the critical parameters for the growth of cells, creation of hydrogels, and application as tissue scaffolds.
