Program Description

Are you a student interested in nutrition and food science? Would you like to become a Registered Dietitian or food scientist/researcher? Are you planning to apply to medical, dental or optometry school? Our undergraduate research experience program in Human Nutrition at The University of Alabama is for you!
The research activities in the From the Bench to the Community: Food and Nutrition Research Experience for Undergraduates program offers bench, clinical, and community nutrition research opportunities, depending on your interest.
Supported by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the Food and Nutrition REU program at the University of Alabama is dedicated to preparing motivated and competent students with the skills and experience needed to excel in the future workforce in food and nutrition fields. Each summer admitted fellows will gain access to invaluable resources, expert training, and immersive hands-on research opportunities on the UA campus.
Students will be matched to a research mentor based on their area of interest and qualifications. Bench Nutrition students may be able to work in cardiometabolic nutrition, nutritional neuroscience, novel food development, or nutrition & infant health. Bedside nutrition students may be able to work with older adults or individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, brain injury, or dementia. Community nutrition students may be able to work in the areas of dietary intake and inflammation, food security, or determinants of food choice.
