Program Description
Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled healthcare professionals who provide preventive services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. To become an AT, students must complete a graduate professional athletic training program. These programs are rigorous, graduate medical education and require an extensive list of prerequisites for acceptance. Students that would be eligible for this summer bridge program are enrolled in kinesiology/exercise science, health science, public health, pre-health professions, or biology majors and have an interest in a career in athletic training. Ideal candidates will be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
Overall the goal of this summer bridge program is to remove barriers to applying to graduate athletic training programs and increase the chances of success once accepted into a graduate program. This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain athletic training-related knowledge and skills through an internship with The University of Alabama Athletics or local high schools and skills lab and course work with AT Program faculty and graduate students. Further, students will receive professional mentoring from professional program students and ATs from underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities. Finally, students will work with AT Program faculty and our program assistant on the application process, development of application materials, and interview skills to prepare them for the admissions process.
